At the SCMP Smart Home forum held in late 2018, I was invited to deliberate on this topic of connected living. This is where I presented my argument that today's Smart Home products are not exactly addressing any specific problems. It is a "nice to have vitamin product" and is not like a "panadol type product" where it actually solves some specific problems. This is also where I presented some data to the local audience that there are 2.5 million households in Hong Kong and 34% of the electricity is consumed in air conditioning and if anyone is concerned about this, the use of air conditioning is going out of hand in pretty much anywhere in Asia.
Smart home technologies should be widely deployed in Hong Kong and Asia if the price could be brought down and made simple.
